Case Scenario for Reading
Difficulties:
Mary is unable to read and spell words to her potential. She may
have been labeled “dyslexic” or “learning disabled.” Despite
many attempts to teach her, Mary still cannot read written words
very well and has to guess from memory or context cues.
Cause:
A primary cause of reading and spelling problems is difficulty
in “hearing” sounds and differentiating
syllables within words, called phonemic or phonological awareness.
Symptoms:
· Cannot sound out words well
· Cannot hear sounds within words
· Cannot correct own reading or spelling errors
· Slow word for word reading
· Skips or substitutes words while reading
· Adds, leaves out or switches letters and sounds in words while _reading
or spelling
Solution:
The Reading Therapy Center, Inc. uses the *Lindamood Phoneme
Sequencing™ and the *Seeing Stars™ programs.
The Reading Therapy
Center, Inc. staff teaches a person to “hear” sounds within words,
thereby improving their ability to become independent self-correcting readers.
